Antonio Lotti (1667 - 1740) is known to choral singers for one work: the wonderful eight-part setting of the Crucifixus. This piece comes from a complete setting of the mass, Missa Sancta Christophori - a magnificent barogue masterpiece.
With a string ensemble and continuo accompaniment led by Pam Redman, the award-winning Levens Choir from South Cumbria will sing this work in the first half of their Christmas concert.
The strings will play Arnold Bax's lovely Lyrical Interlude and after some seasonal carols the Choir will close with Gerald Finzi's exquisite In Terra Pax. This tells the Christmas story from a shepherd's point of view and was inspired by a visit to a hilltop church in Gloucestershire on a winter's night. The music evokes feelings of how that first Christmas might have happened in England.
